WHERE AM I?
It wasn’t until 1982 that China created its first national park: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. They couldn’t have chosen a better site – Zhangjiajie is famous for its 3,000 vertical pillars, each hundreds of feet tall and covered in dense green foliage. These pillars were formed by erosion and draw in upwards of 30 million tourists every year.
One of these pillars was named the “Southern Sky Column, ”and it stretched 3,544 feet into the air, the length of 78 school buses. In a strange turn of art imitating life imitating art, in 2010 the name was changed to “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar, used photographs of the pinnacle as inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora. This was part of a successful attempt to bring more tourists into the national park, using phrases like “Pandora is far but Zhangjiajie is near” and “discover the real world of Pandora.”
For the past few years I’ve been heading to China through the summer months to work in a theme park doing skating shows, as well as exploring the beauty and craziness that is, China!
This year I was lucky enough to have my parents come over for 10 days and let me show them around! Our journey started in Shanghai (video coming soon) and then we made the trip inland to the very picturesque Zhangjiajie National Park, which is now known as the Avatar Mountains after the movie featured scenes of the beautiful mountain scapes that make up the national park. We spend the next three days wondering the park, and taking in every breathtaking view, as well as exploring the little town located right in the mountains – here’s my travel video from this magical place!
I put a lot of hard work into this video, and I hope y’all dig it! Be sure to give it a like and let me know what you think in the comments section on Youtube; also if you’re really feeling it, share it around and hit that subscribe button, as I’ve got so many more videos coming real soon!
