Traveler, Photographer, Videographer, Designer, Life-liver
Where to begin… well my story is rather long, so I’ll try to keep this short!
My name is Rob Kellett, I’m 25 years young, from the ever sunny city of Brisbane, Australia. I’m a travel enthusiast, with strong passion for Photography & Videography, Graphic Design and living life to the fullest! (I’m also a professional inline skater on the side!)
That’s what’s really on your mind right! Why on earth am I promoting travelling with photos of me laying dead on the floor in various locations and countries?
Let’s take a step back to my younger years… I always had a huge passion for travelling, and I am fortunate enough to have family in various parts of the globe which meant a lot of family vacations to various different countries throughout my child hood; which in result grew into a fascination with different cultures, countries and the incredible feeling one has from adventure to foreign lands.
Now, remember earlier when I said I am also a professional inline skater on the side… well in 2014 I was offered a life changing opportunity to travel to China and perform skating demos over 6 months throughout the Chinese Summer. It was an unforgettable journey, and one that changed the way I thought about life forever. That trip made me realise that following your passions, putting in hard work, and always saying yes, can open so many unimaginable opportunities that otherwise would be missed!
It was an incredible summer, and I came back home to Australia with fresh eyes and a fresh perspective on life… this did have it’s downsides however. I got back to a regular job (man’s got to eat)… and soon enough couldn’t help but shake the feeling that there’s more to life than this, more to life the a standard 9-5… I grew this deep ingrained feeling that I was constantly running out of time; running out of time to complete all the things I wanted to do, running out of time to visit all the places I dream of, and running out of time to live life to the absolute fullest…
So, In 2015 I went back to china for another summer demo season, full of skating, travelling and enjoying life to the fullest, chasing that feeling, if you know what I mean! After returning home, a year went by and these feelings of running out of time had all but gotten worse… It was the strangest feeling, and at the time I had no idea what would happen next…
On October 31st 2016, I was enjoying the Sunday afternoon sun, skating outside my house on my quiet suburban street, when I was hit head-on by a speeding drunk driver at 80km/h…
It was a hit-and-run… and if you’re wondering, yes I nearly died.
Without getting too graphic, I was rushed to the P.A Hospital in Brisbane, where the amazing surgeons & nurses rebuilt me to become Rob Kellett 2.0!
Now it was real; that feeling I had so deep in me about running out of time all made sense… It was as if I just needed this insane accident to wake me up inside, and light the fire! Feeling beyond lucky to be alive, and to be given a second chance to do all those things I was so concerned I’d never have the time to do, I quite my job, and set sail to Thailand…
It was sometime mid February 2017, I was with an amazing group of friends, watching the sunset over the Gulf Of Thailand, when I had this huge rush of emotions… life was good, really good… and this moment in particular, was one of those moment I knew I’d remember forever; a moment that I very well could have missed, had I died during that freak accident!
So, as a reminder to myself of just how lucky I am to still be here, to be living this incredible moment; I laid down dead on the beach in front of the setting sun and made the first ever “dead photo”.
For the rest of that trip, I made a dead photo whenever a moment similar would arise… and before I knew it I had quite a strange little collection. Sharing them through to facebook and having a huge positive reaction from friends and family. They loved the quirkiness, but most importantly they loved the message they stood for:
Travel is good for the soul, and it’s something I feel very passionate about! Everyone should travel, before they can’t! Travel is one of the only things in life that costs money to do, but is guaranteed to make you return richer… richer in knowledge, wisdom, life experiences and memories!
I encourage everyone to live a life so full of precious moments that they too could make a dead photo every day!
